Job Description: Director of Christian Education 20 hours per week with a flexible schedule Good Shepherd United Methodist Church Church Profile: Good Shepherd United Methodist Church is a congregation of nearly 400 members with an average worship attendance of close to 200. Our Vision Statement is: “To connect, grow and send disciples of Jesus Christ.” Christ is our model for life, and we believe He is the only Son of God, sent by God to bring forgiveness for our sin, and to redeem us for the kingdom of God. Accountable to: Senior Pastor and Staff Parish Relations Committee Works Closely with: Adults, youth and children, volunteers, and families Relates to: Children, ages 2-18 Qualification Requirements: Prefer a college degree in Christian Education and youth ministry experience or prior experience building and leading a Christian Education Program. Must have a mature understanding of the Christian faith and promote the growth and deepening of the Christian faith through youth and small group ministry. Core Values: The Director of Education must understand the church’s core values, vision and mission, and appropriately represents the church following these core values, and work cooperatively with all ministries to achieve those goals. The Director of Education must develop and plan studies and activities that focus on the primary core value of discipleship. Summary of Duties: Leads and directs educational and recreational programs for persons of all ages. The Director of Education, under the supervision of the Senior Pastor, will work to achieve the goals set by the church, specifically by creating and maintaining personal and group relationships. Guides the formation and establishes the curriculum of Christian Education. Maintains contact with volunteers and leaders to insure the health and growth of Christian Education. Assists in worship as directed by the Senior Pastor. Specific Duties and Responsibilities: • Establishes current and long-term objectives, goals, plans and programs for Christian Education. • Conducts Christian Education consistent with established policies, goals, and values set by the church, district, and conference. • Interacts and coordinates with other ministries of the church to ensure all departments are working cooperatively. • Establishes and maintains effective communication throughout the organization. • Markets Christian Education and programming through newsletters, electronic media, flyers, brochures, posters, and personal contacts. • Maintains and grows in skills and knowledge related to Christian Education. • Maintains confidentiality and discretion in all aspects involving children, youth and members of the church and preschool. • Knows and understands the Child Protection Guidelines • Attends all staff meetings, church council, and leadership meetings. • Involves youth in relevant volunteer and mission opportunities of the church. • Mentors youth through personal counseling, facilitation, and ministerial activities to grow into well rounded, spiritually strong members of the church. • Recruit, train, involve and engage volunteers in a variety of ministry opportunities such as but not limited to: • Worship, confirmation and Sunday School hours • Vacation Bible School, Retired’s Bible School, Christmas Bible School • Weekday programming, including but not limited to: Summer kids activities and week night fellowship opportunities. • Middle and high school camps and mission trips • Other duties as assigned by his/her supervisor and/or the pastor
