Today on Conversations Melissa Montana is joined by CEO of The Rescue Mission, Pastor Thomas McArthur, to talk about Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week. The Rescue Mission is shedding light on poverty, food insecurity, and homelessness in Northeast Indiana during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week November 13th – 21st. This annual event unites local volunteers and organizations nationwide to spotlight the economic, social, environmental, and personal challenges faced by many residents in our community. Throughout the week, participants engage in community service as well as in educational, fundraising, and advocacy initiatives to tackle these crucial issues.
Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Census Bureau indicates that over 100,000 residents in Northeast Indiana struggle with food insecurity. McArthur emphasizes, “Hunger and homelessness are troubling issues that affect many members of our community. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week provides us with an opportunity to confront these challenges head-on, garner public support, and advocate for solutions.”
