Intermittent Tour Guide

The Levi & Catharine Coffin State Historic Site in Fountain City, Indiana is looking for an intermittent tour guide. The position requires a flexibile schedule, with the potential of working weekends. This position will be trained in assisting with daily operations of the site as well as giving guided tours of the 1839 Coffin home which was once known as the Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad. 

The Levi & Catharine Coffin State Historic Site encompasses the historic Coffin home as well as the Levi & Catharine Coffin Interpretive Center, which opened to the public in December 2016. Annual visitorship to the site averages 12,000 or more, with a quarter of that being school students. The site is part of the Indiana State Museum & Historic Site system, being one of 12 locations were visitors can learn more about Indiana history.

Experience/Certification Required:
This postion requires a person with great customer service skills. Anyone with a background in education, giving tours or public speaking would be qualified. We are also looking for someone willing to work in a team environment and interested in assisting with some of the public programs hosted by the site. The candidate will also have to be open to learning about the Coffin story, the history of Quakers in Indiana and understanding the impact that slavery had on the United States in the early 19th Century. 

Education Level: Bachelor's Degree
Career Level: Entry Level

Salary/Benefits:
The position pays $10/hour and will be asked to work on average three days a week. This schedule may be somewhat flexible due to the needs of the site. As a member of the ISMHS family, after six months of employment, the position will receive a free membership to ISMHS system. This membership has reciprocal benefits the hundreds of museums nationwide.
